Rwanda Police last night shot dead a suspected armed terrorist in Nyarutarama area, Gasabo district in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.

According to a statement issued by Police on Thursday morning, the suspect, identified as Channy Mbonigaba from Rubavu district in Western province, exchanged fire with police in an operation that lasted at least 3 hours.

Rwanda has recently faced a number of similar terror cases, in which police says some are linked to Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

In January this year, Police shot dead another suspect; one Muhammad Mugemangango who was in detention on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities.

Mugemangango, a Muslim, was killed after attempting to escape from a Police car after a search operation at his Kimironko residence. On the way back, the suspect jumped off the vehicle where upon he was shot and died instantly. Muhammad Mugemangango was Deputy Imam Kimironko Mosque.

Mugemangango was under investigations for mentoring Rwandan youths into Jihad and recruiting them to join Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

Police then issued a statement saying it had secured information from the public of terror networks.

Meanwhile, as Police, a police officer was injured as an operation went on to disarm and arrest the suspect in last night’s operation.

In a statement, Police said: “RNP reassures the general public, particularly residents of Nyarutarama that operations are complete and situation is back to normal.”
