Driver arrested attempting to bribe police

Police have arrested Jean de dieu Niyibizi, a driver for allegedly attempting to bribe a police officer so that he could illegally acquire a motor vehicle inspection certificate without having his vehicle inspected.

According to Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Emmanuel Karinda, the Director of the Motor vehicle Inspection Centre Niyibizi’s vehicle had failed to qualify for an inspection certificate twice due several mechanical problems and on the third trial, he attempted to bribe the officer on duty who arrested him.

CSP Karinda farther pointed out, “the motor-vehicle inspections are part of the preventive measures against accidents to keep our citizens safe, whoever attempts to bribe his way to acquire the certificate illegally will be punished by the laws.”

“Police officers are well trained and have over and over exhibited the highest level of professionalism. Bribery is therefore not something we can tolerate. Those who seek services should go through the right channels,” said the director.

Niyibizi confessed to having attempted to bribe a police officer and advised his fellow drivers to desist from the malpractice.

Article 641 of the Penal Code stipulates that any person who offers a gift in order to get an illegal service or refrain from carrying out any usual duties shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of five to seven years and a fine of twice or up to ten times the value of what they had offered in bribes.
