At least 300 patients will receive free surgery courtesy of the medical outreach programme sponsored by the Rwanda Military Hospital and Rotary Club India.
The patients are being treated by medical experts from Rotary Club India and Rwanda military medics at the University Teaching Hospital Kigali (CHUK) and Rwanda Military Hospital in Kanombe.
The programme will mostly benefit patients suffering from physical deformations resulting from accidents, birth defects and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Some of the cases being handled include orthopaedic problems and ENT (ear, nose and throat) problems
One of the Rwandan medical experts Col. Alex Butera said that there is a team of 25 Indian surgeons and five from Rwanda specialised in plastic and orthopedic surgery are offering free treatment since February 25.
“The treatment is free and so far the programme is running as planned. Our medical teams are handling between 15 and 20 cases on a daily basis” Butera said.
One of the patients, Emelyne Nyiransabimana from Rwamagana district said that she has suffered from a tumor for three years and had failed to get treatment until this opportunity surfaced.
“I am blessed to get free treatment, after years of living in pain due to lack of financial capacity to afford surgery” Nyiransabimana said.
The Rwanda Minister of Defense General James Kabarebe visited the Kanombe military hospital this March 2, 2016 to assess the progress of the medical outreach programme.
Gen. Kabarebe hailed the medical teams and said that the assistance given to the beneficiaries is a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to support citizen needs.
“We appreciate the good work being done by the medical experts, to treat our people; and we would like continue this collaboration in future” Kabarebe said.
