Criminals such as drug dealers and burglars usually prefer to employ services of motorists, and urged them to watch against being manipulated by such characters.
“You have a big role to play as providers of transport services in the fight against crimes”, Paul Jules Ndamage, Mayor of Kicukiro district has said.
The mayor says that motorcyclists reach most areas while taking different people, something that makes them the most efficient chain to ensure timely reporting of crimes in and around the city.
“When you take someone you are suspicious or you think he may do harm to you ,just go on the side and first call police, why do you risk your life when security organs are there to help you ,” said the Mayor .
The mayor says that most thieves use motorcycles which puts motorcyclists at an advantage of curbing the said crimes adding that early reporting will help police to foil their (thieves) activities.
He said this while meeting motorcyclists operating in Kigali on Monday after several reports indicated that motorcycle theft had increased which claimed lives of two motorcyclists in Kigali in recent weeks.
ACP Elias Mwesigye, Regional Police Commander for Kigali said that police is mounting an operation to ensure that thieves that have been terrorizing motorcyclists are arrested and prosecuted.
“These thieves cannot beat the strength of thousands of motorcyclists, we must uproot all them and all their networks,” he said before parading suspected motorcycle thieves that were arrested in the recent weeks.
He adds,” Kigali and the country at large are enjoying security and these small elements are also going to be eliminated and this is why we need your efforts in community policing.”
The thieves, he says are part of the network that has been stealing motorcycles around Kigali and taking them to Burundi while others are sold in bits as spare parts.
