In a continued effort to reach out to the entire country, Rwanda National Police (RNP) on September 11took the 2015 road safety awareness activities to six secondary schools in Gakenke, Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge districts.
During the campaign, Police equipped the students with knowledge about traffic rules and regulations.
The students who benefited from the campaign are from Lycée Catholique Saint Alain de Mataba in Gakenke, Gicaca Primary school in Gasabo District while in Kicukiro and Gasabo Districts the students from Saint Patrick and ESA Nyarugunga benefited from police lessons.
Part of the message delivered to students was about educating them on how to use roads, which side to walk on, and how to cross roads.
At Lycée Catholique Saint Alain de Mataba, the Traffic Month event was presided over by the Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Mark Rugero who encouraged students to always use zebra crossing, and walk on the pavements.
With regards to pedestrians crossing roads, IP Rugero told students that; “When crossing a road, you must look left and right at all times. Where there are traffic lights, you must abide by the instructions; this is how you will ensure your individual safety.”
The Headmaster of Lycée Catholique Saint Alain de Mataba, Théogene Twagiramungu, describe how students have been using the roads around the school saying that the lectures from Police will highly enable teachers to ensure students abide by traffic rules.
“Normally children play in roads while leaving or coming to school, we will ensure we keep them off this habit. I am optimistic they also grasped the message from police well,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to the police over the road safety awareness activities saying that by the end of the month, no doubt all Rwandans would have acquired basic knowledge on road safety.
Meanwhile, similar events about the traffic month are being conducted countrywide, in the Eastern Province, they also focused on enlightening students on road safety tips and painting zebra crossing in an event that was presided over by District Mayors, Army representatives and Police officers.
