Residents of Kayonza show their support for constitutional amendment.
While the US president Barack Obama thinks that no one should be in office for life, Rwandans have said that they still want President Paul Kagame; saying that no one should tell them what they want.
Rwandans affirm, they have already made up their minds and their choice-falling on the current President Paul Kagame.
US President Barack Obama while addressing African union warned leaders against clinging to power when their terms end.
Addressing the African Union at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, President Obama said that it is important for leaders to adhere to their constitutions and leave office when their term ends.
“African democracy is at risk when leaders refuse to step aside when their term ends,” President Obama said that if he could run for a third term he thinks he would win, while calling for African leaders to adhere to term limits.
According to Rwandans, no single Rwandan is going to listen to anyone from outside; most Rwandans have made this clear to their members of parliament.
Such statements have been running throughout the countryside as members of parliament continue to consult citizens for their views on the amendment of the constitutional article 101- that limits presidential terms to two-seven-year terms.
From the provinces of the east and west- residents in Kayonza to Rubavu Districts have decried the delay in the process of the referendum saying that they want to seal the vote for Kagame as a result of what they envision in him if he stays in power.
In Mwili sector of Kayonza district residents told members of parliament that Kagame should be given chance to lead the country as long as he is still alive and the changes in limiting the term of office can be done to whoever comes after him.
“We have seen what Kagame has done for us in the years of his leadership. We have not yet exhausted his ability and visions for us. The changes in term limits can apply to others not our Kagame” one resident identified as Solange Mukamugema said.
She also that “Rwandans don’t owe anybody anything, warning that those who want to make choices for Rwandans or shape our future will not be given any chance”.
In Kinazi sector of Huye district, southern province, residents told lawmakers that they are worried if Kagame is not left to stay in power since they have not yet seen anyone as trustworthy as President Kagame.
“We cannot be certain of the future without Kagame. For now, he is our best choice and we are worried that others may come with different agenda which could not be good for us”
Gloriosa Niyonsenga said during a public rally in Kayonza on Tuesday.
She also noted that “Rwanda has changed for good and as Rwandans we are the people who stand up for their rights”.
