Burundi military has this Wednesday overthrown President Pierre Nkurunziza while he was away in Tanzania attending 13th East african Community Extraordinary summit of heads of state.
Maj. Gen Godfroid Niyombare announced this afternoon that he had dismissed Nkurunziza from his position.
Gen. Niyombare was previsouly serving as the country’s Spy Chief. He had been suspended from duty by Nkurunziza in February .
In his comments the General said; “Regarding President Nkurunziza’s arrogance and defiance of the international community which advised him to respect the constitution and Arusha peace agreement, the committee for the establishment of the national concord decide: President Nkurunziza is dismissed, his government is dismissed too.”
