Rwanda’s Itorero programme has greater outlook impact on Rwandan society. Historically, Rwandans recognised, appreciated, cherished and celebrated their traditional values of patriotism and heroism.
The advent of colonialists disconnected and broke the umbilical cord Rwandans had with their roots thus denying them the opportunity to celebrate who they are and got stagnated within the values of their former colonisers.
The re-birth of Itorero is a fundamental factor in regaining our lost treasurable glory of our tradition. Rwandans were enslaved in bondage of colonial ideologies, mentality and took pride in them for a long time.
Rwandans as well as Africans negated their cultural heritage, values and could not celebrate their music, arts, food and traditional descriptions. Itorero programme rediscovery and rejuvenation of Rwanda traditional values characterised by pride, confidence, aspirations and capabilities will spur Rwanda to achieve greater heights.
Fundamentally, it is very hard for society to sustainably develop when it has lost faith, trust, interest and control over its traditional values. Therefore, Rwanda’s Itorero programme of connecting Rwandans to their basic roots is relevant in understanding and embracing transformation because it liberates us ideologically and in deeds.
Today, proud Itorero graduates are happy and ready to tell the Rwanda story and are in charge of their country’s affairs. Harnessing our traditional basics for growth and improved livelihoods will surge Rwanda’s transformation quicker, easier and sustainable.
More importantly, targeting the youth in Itorero programme will facilitate intra and intergenerational transfers of indigenous knowledge and values will consequently enhance Rwanda’s continued prosperity.
